Mid-Autumn: The Mooncake Festival

The 15th day of September marks the second most celebrated festival among the Chinese people. It is the time of the year when families come together for a night of merriment and laughter while eating mooncakes, lighting lanterns, and offering their thanks to the gods and the moon.

Traditional beliefs claim that full moon represents prosperity, unity, luck, and harmony. Behind these symbolisms are folklores that speak tales of love and sacrifice that somehow also inspired this special day.

One of these tales is about a woman named Chang’e, who ascended to the heavens after drinking a powerful elixir to protect her husband, the great warrior Hou Yi, from another warrior jealous of Hou Yi’s prowess. Chang’e’s love for Hou Yi drew her towards the moon — the only place in heaven where she could be closest to the husband she left on earth. Out of his love for his wife, Hou Yi, began to offer food as sacrifices to Chang’e. Not long after, people learned about the couple’s fate and soon started their own offerings to the goddess of the moon for good luck and peace.

Over the years, the Mid-Autumn Festival has become a popular celebration that brings families together. And other than mooncakes, lanterns, and worshipping the moon, giving gifts has also become a part of the tradition.

Although food, especially mooncakes, is a popular gift of choice, you can make yours even more special and meaningful with these gift ideas:

The story of the moon rabbit or jade rabbit is another popular folklore related to the Mid-Autumn Festival. According to the legend, a rabbit sacrificed itself by jumping into the fire so it can feed three hungry, old people. The three, however, were immortals pretending to be humans. Moved by the act, the immortals turned the rabbit into a jade rabbit that became a companion of the Moon Goddess, Chang’e.
