How to look hot without sweltering this summer

Between summer and winter, summer is a more challenging time for men when it comes to dressing up. Lots of things have to be considered. Although the season is an opportunity for a more relaxed dressing, you still have to keep in mind it shouldn’t be more casual than is appropriate for the occasion (You wouldn’t wear a V-neck shirt during an insurance client pitch, would you?). And if you do nail the style that perfectly balances casual and formal, you next become conscious about the fabric, making sure not to pick those that would leave you dripping with sweat after just a few minutes outside.

On top of suitability and material,  you also want something that’s not too basic-looking. After all, it’s summer; there has to be some shine in your get-up. In no other time does the fashion-versus-function conundrum become more pressing for men than during this season. Here, using items from GQ’s June and July issues, we provide pointers that will help you break through the dilemma and come out looking hot but not sweltering.

1. Stick to natural fibers. A rule of thumb when shopping for your summer wardrobe: avoid synthetic fibers, i.e. spandex, and choose natural ones instead, like cotton. We particularly like this button-down shirt by Saturday NYC as it ticks all our criteria for good summer clothes for men: 1. It’s made of cotton, so you’ll be comfortable in it even in the height of summer; 2. It’s in a versatile color (midnight blue), appropriate both for casual events and the workplace; and 3. It’s loose-fit, allowing the skin to breathe.

2. Prints won’t hurt. While a plain colored garment like the  Saturday NYC shirt above is a safe choice, don’t be afraid to put on prints, like this palm-print polo shirt by Dolce and Gabbana. It’s the season of music festivals and trips to exotic destinations; shouldn’t your clothes exude the celebratory mood, too? A tip for wearing prints is to limit it to a single garment in your outfit.  Pairing a print top with a print bottom is already overdoing it.

3. Shorts go a long way. A pair of shorts is a favorite among men during summer. Note, though, that shorts are strictly a casual affair and you shouldn’t be caught wearing them in your workplace. But if you want to keep a sophisticated look even in shorts, The Art of Manliness recommends those with the least detail, such as these chinos from Faherty.

4. Board shorts can be stylish. These board shorts by American Eagle Outfitters are a good example of how print can be worn stylishly: the smaller the print, the sleeker your look becomes. Why bother with style in a setting where you wear the least amount of clothing, anyway? Because you worked hard for that beach body; you wouldn’t want a pair of board shorts with laughable design to ruin everything, would you?

5. Yes, flipflops have classier cousins. You’ve been invited to a pool party – in a swanky hotel. You can’t show up in your leather shoes nor in flipflops from the supermarket. In cases like this, Gucci and Want Les Essentiels have got you covered. Both luxury brands have come up with their versions of one of the oldest footwear around: the sandals. Gucci’s sandals have webbing for their upper material in its signature red and green, leather for straps, and rubber for footrest. On the other hand,  Want Les Essentiel’s Mateos Toe Strap Sandals combine leather and canvas for their upper material and use leather for their footrests.

6. Accessories are your aces. A good thing about summer dressing is you can be adventurous with your accessories. Add panache to your get-up with a Panama hat like this one from Loro Piana. Show your free-spirited side with a garnet beaded bracelet from Mikia. Then round them all up with a pair of aviators, like these gold-framed ones by Thom Browne or these gradient-colored lenses by Randolph.

In places where it’s not technically summer but the weather remains warm, for instance, Southeast Asia and Northern Australia, these can be worn almost everyday. Guys in tropical countries have it easy.
